Tips and Refunds
The short version
Sub Crawl is free. There is nothing to buy, no premium tier and no subscription. The only money that ever changes hands is a voluntary tip, if you feel like leaving one, through Buy Me a Coffee. A tip is a gift to say thanks, not a payment for anything, so it isn’t refundable in the way a purchase would be. That said, if you tipped by mistake or got charged twice, email us within 14 days and we’ll do our best to get it reversed.
The app is free
Every feature of Sub Crawl, including live crawls and the scoreboard, is available to everyone at no cost. Tipping unlocks nothing: you get exactly the same app whether you tip or not, and we never gate a feature, a crawl or a scoreboard behind a payment. We don’t sell anything, run ads or charge for accounts.
There are no subscriptions and no recurring charges of any kind from Sub Crawl. If you ever see a recurring charge you think is connected to us, it isn’t something we set up; check the payment page you used and get in touch.
How tipping works
The tip button in the app is an ordinary link to our page on Buy Me a Coffee. Tapping it takes you to their website; nothing from Buy Me a Coffee is embedded inside Sub Crawl. Everything from that point happens on their site:
- You choose an amount and pay on Buy Me a Coffee’s pages, under their terms of service and privacy policy. Their payment provider (Stripe) handles the card, Apple Pay or Google Pay transaction.
- We never see or store your card details. Buy Me a Coffee shows us the tip, the amount and whatever name or message you chose to leave (if any), and pays the money out to us.
- Inside Sub Crawl we only record that the tip button was tapped (an event called
tip_clicked), not who tapped it or whether a payment followed. See the Privacy Policy.
Because the payment happens entirely on Buy Me a Coffee, any receipt, card query or payment dispute goes through them and Stripe first. We’ll help where we can, but we don’t hold the money-handling side of it.
Tips are gifts, not purchases
A tip is a voluntary gift. You are not buying goods, a service, a licence or a feature, and no contract for goods or services is formed when you tip. This matters for two reasons:
- Tips are non-refundable, except where the law requires a refund or in the mistaken-payment cases described below.
- The 14-day cancellation right under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 applies to purchases of goods, services and digital content made at a distance. It does not apply to gifts or donations. We honour mistaken-payment requests anyway, on a similar 14-day timescale, because that seems the decent thing to do.
Nothing on this page takes away any right you have under law that can’t be excluded.
Duplicate or mistaken payments
If something obviously went wrong, for example:
- you were charged twice for one tip;
- you meant to tip £3 and ended up tipping £30;
- you tapped through and paid without meaning to, or someone else used your phone;
then email mooneymatthew02@gmail.com within 14 days of the payment. Tell us the date, the amount, and the name or email you used on Buy Me a Coffee so we can find it. We will ask Buy Me a Coffee to reverse the payment where that is possible. Refunds are processed by Buy Me a Coffee and Stripe and go back to the original payment method; how long that takes to show on your statement is down to your bank, but it’s usually within 5 to 10 working days.
We can’t promise a reversal in every case, because the tools for doing it belong to Buy Me a Coffee and Stripe rather than us, and there may be a point after which they won’t process one. Get in touch as soon as you notice and we’ll try.
If you’d simply rather not have tipped, having thought about it, we’d still rather you asked than felt stuck. Email us within 14 days and we’ll treat it the same way. You can also use Buy Me a Coffee’s own support, which may be quicker for anything about the payment itself.
A note on receipts and tax
Buy Me a Coffee emails you a receipt for each tip. Because Sub Crawl is a hobby run by an individual and not a registered charity, tips are not charitable donations and can’t be Gift Aided or claimed as a charitable deduction. Any receipt is a record of payment, not a tax receipt.
Changes to this page
If we ever change how tipping works, for example by switching provider or adding a way to pay, we’ll update this page and the “last updated” date at the top. This version was last updated on 6 September 2026.
